Appendicitis is an infection resulting from obstruction of the lumen of the appendix from either
fecal matter or sometimes a tumor. The appendix is part of the intestine and is connected to the
right side of the colon.
- Fever
- Anorexia
- Nausea, vomiting
- Right sided lower abdominal pain/tenderness
When the lumen of the appendix gets obstructed (appendicitis), the appendix may perforate
resulting in peritonitis.
Usually by clinical history and exam. Ultrasound and CT scans may also aid in the diagnosis.
Surgery is recommended in all cases. If diagnosed early, it may be treated by removal of the
appendix. We have experience performing this operation laparoscopically.
